Cerebral Palsy & Erb's Palsy
Cerebral Palsy is a medical condition that results physical limitations, reduced mental function and impaired speech, vision and hearing in the child. Cerebral Palsy can be caused by lack of oxygen being delivered to the brain during pregnancy, labor or delivery. The lack of oxygen being delivered to the brain can be caused by negligence of a healthcare provider.
Erb’s Palsy (brachial plexus injury) is an injury to the large group of nerves known as the brachial plexus. These nerves run from the spinal column to all of the muscles in the shoulders and arms. Children born with Erb’s Palsy may suffer from partial or total paralysis of these parts of the body. Erb’s Palsy is commonly associated with a problematic birth and occurs when a baby’s shoulders become stuck in the birth canal during vaginal childbirth.
In many birth injury cases it becomes apparent that a C-section should have been performed due to the size or position of the baby. Birth injuries often occur when the child is too large for a vaginal delivery or is in an unusual position. In these situations, the baby may go too long without oxygen or it may be subject to excessive force during the delivery.
